Some 50 members of a group calling itself the Boston Free Speech Coalition gather at the Parkman Bandstand. Meanwhile, some 40,000 counter-protesters gather nearby on Boston Common to protest what they see as the first group’s espousal of racial hatred and fascism. The counter-demonstration is one several held in cities across the U.S. on this day in reaction to the killing of a woman at a rally by white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia, a week before.
